Travel Information

Playgrounds is being hosted Melbourne, which has been ranked "The world's most liveable city" six years in a row. So we've listed a few things for out out-of-town guests to help them get around and enjoy the city.

Airport

You will be flying into Tullamarine airport, which is both International and Domestic.

The are no direct trains to and from the city, so the cheapest and most efficient way is to use the SkyBus which is $19 one way and the kiosks are outside. SkyBus' are big and red, so they're impossible to miss. The SkyBus will take you to Southern Cross Station for which the rest of the city is easily accessible from

You can catch a taxi if you wish, but it won't get you to the city any faster, and it's about $50 one way.

Public Transport

Melbourne has a great public transport system which consists of trains, busses and of course, trams. To use the public transport facilities, you will need to purchase a Myki card at any 7-Eleven convenience store, which will cost you $10 for the card, as well as any money you want to put on the card for fares.

Each fare will give you unlimited travel for one hour, which costs $3.79. To use your fare, you just put your card up to the Myki terminal and wait for the display to show approval.

There is a Free-zone for trams in the CBD, so you don't need to use your Myki card when travelling around the city itself. When you leave the Free-zone, there will be signs at the stops as well as announcements of the tram's PA. If you get caught using public transport without paying the fare, there's an on the spot fine for $70.

Cafes, Restaurants and Food

All of these things are amazing in Melbourne, and finding the right one can be a bit of a struggle itself because there are so many places to go. If you've never had a smashed avocado brunch, then you haven't yet lived. For our American guests, it's also worth mentioning that Australian breakfasts are either sweet or savoury, never both.

Playgrounds recommends:

  • Proud Mary's, Collingwood
  • Journeyman, Prahran

For finding the right cafes, restaurants, we recommend checking out Broadsheet Melbourne, or Urban List Melbourne

Bars and Drinks

The city has an amazing selection of bars catering for all palettes. If the weather is good, we recommend finding a nice rooftop bar in or around the city, or one of the many hidden cocktail bars.

Playgrounds recommends:

  • Naked for Satan, Fitzroy. Rooftop with views of city
  • Lui Bar, City. 55 levels up with a great view of sunset

For finding the right bars, we recommend checking out Broadsheet Melbourne, or Urban List Melbourne

Coffee

Sydney people will try tell you they have the best coffee, but everyone knows Australia's best coffees are poured in Melbourne. We have so many cafes scattered throughout the city and inner suburbs offering all types of coffees and blends. Our American guests should note that Australian coffees don't use cream, just milk.

Playgrounds recommends:

  • Brother Bubba Budan, City
  • Patricia's, City

If you want to go on the hunt for coffee, we recommend checking out the Bean Hunter website or app, which is made by our very own MC, Jesse Collis.

Sim Cards

Prepaid Sim Cards are available within most 7-Eleven convenient stores. We recommend getting the Boost UNLTD+ Prepaid Sim which costs $40 for 28 days of service. Make sure the pack comes with the correct Sim size for your device.
